Self Potrait

A self portrait that I did over this winter break to test out some line work.

Let's Be Hip Together

Artists are too readily tossed about by the currents of “cool” and “hip.” People these days want to feel like they discovered something all by themselves and will abandon loyalty to their REAL tastes because they are afraid they’ll be seen as following the crowd. The irony is that all this trying not to fit in is a blatant attempt just to fit in. God help those of you who like something popular because you actually like it! It’s like walking in to a hipster coffee shop or an Urban Outfitters and saying, “I like U2, the Dave Matthews Band, and you know what? I even listen to Coldplay sometimes.”

Now, I know that this phenomenon is not new. Ever since the beatniks there have been groups that pride themselves on not being in groups. But I want to encourage those of us who are awake enough in society to not fall into these traps. I believe that it’s great to enjoy the cutting edge as long as we maintain our individuality.

I’ll leave you with some advice given to me by a hero of mine in the illustration field:

“You know, the people whose work you love, they are all doing what they love to do. They’re not doing the style du jour; they’re doing their own thing which comes from a deeper place than what’s fashionable.”

Howdy!
